It's Official... Well mostly official

Looks pretty good, no? As you can see from the image at left, the Cirrus formerly known as N334CD is now N334CM! Or at least it is mostly... She is currently flying under a provisional N number but as soon as we get the revised registration back, it will be totally official!

Why, you might ask, did we do this? Well, given that so many Cirri have tail numbers that end in CD, we figured it would be safer to change it to something else to lessen the likelihood of callsign confusion in the busy SoCal airspace. I've been up at least once when there was another xx4CD (which ATC shortens to Cirrus 4CD) up in the air.

Here's is our handy dandy little guide to the steps involved:

  1. Find an available N number
  2. Reserve the N number ($10/year each N number)
  3. Request the change via letter to FAA:
       FAA Aircraft Registration Branch
       P.O. Box 25504
       Oklahoma City, OK 73125
  4. When you receive the OK from the FAA, change the numbers making sure you keep a copy of the authorization along with original registration in the plane
  5. Return the original page of the confirmation of change to the FAA at the address shown on the 3 part form.
  6. Wait for new registration
  7. Update everyone in the world about the change (airport, insurance, lender, FBOs, etc.)
