Garmin recently launched their G3000 system and manufacturers have begun jumping on the bandwagon; committing installations into upcoming offerings like the HondaJet and PipeJet. This new system offers a touchscreen interface to replace mechanical knobs and switches. Kinda makes that old “Cirrus Perspective G1000" system seem outdated in comparison.
Seeing the demonstrator interface with system reminds one more of working with an iPhone or an Android cell phone what with all the gestures to initiate scrolling of the interface as well as typing on virtual keypads/keyboards. One only hopes that this system is less likely to “stop and think” about keypresses like my Android phone does from time to time. I can barely put up with that on my phone; the last thing I want in a avionics interface is having to wait for it to respond to my input!
Aside from that, this is pretty darn cool technology!
