Cessna's Cirrus-Killer Makes an Oshkosh Fly-By

Most of the online site's I've seen have fairly bad pictures due to the time of day and weather when Cessna's new composite plane fly by but I found this night shot and had to post it:

Pretty sexy looking beast. God I wish I was in Wisconsin right now... Oh well...

No hard data has been presented by Cessna, but the following can be observed or deduced from available photographs:

1. Fuselage
Composite fuselage (lead: compound curves, finish, and layout of doors and windows).
Left side shows 2 doors plus luggage door for a total of 3 or 4 passenger doors (right side not visible)

2. Main wing
Forward sweep leading edge tapering main wing (swept for cockpit visibility?).
Metal construction? (lead: no visible flaps hinges under wing, internal kinematics unusual with composite wing, but) Unusual for a Cessna; no Frise aileron, differential aileron?).

3. Landing gear
Fixed trigear with;
Castoring nose wheel.
Rear swept main gear, with;
pronounced knee outboard of fuselage (might mean som kind of shock absorber). Track aprox 26% of wingspan.

Fuselage approx less than 88% of wingspan spinner to fin. If we assume a for Cessna normal wingspan of 11 meter, then: LOA: < 9,70m (C182: 8.84 m). Main gear track: ~ 2,86m
Tailplane span: ~ 4,50m

This is all in all a very interesting configuration. It would make sense for Cessna to go with a metal wing since they have the necessary tooling and experience and it would probably simplify certification.

Great analysis Fredrik.

Have you seen other photos elsewhere on this?

I heard recently that Cessna's "LSA" was more a proof of concept rather than a prototype. Wonder if this is more of the same? Either way, good to see them getting a bit more progressive. Can only help GA all 'round.

All signs point to some interesting times for GA in the next few years, even if you discount the "VLJ revolution" that Eclipse and others would have you believe is coming.

has a series of pictures of both clean configuration and with flaps deployed.

I get the impression that the NGP is actually far more ahead than the LSA and might get an official launch as early as november.

Another thing...

The location of the door handles, door layout and windows size and layout makes one wonder if this is a pressurized airframe.
