Aviation Android Apps Website is Live!

Category: Yawsa!MJG @ 08:25

image Android phone fans (who just happen to be aviators) rejoice! We now have our OWN aviation apps review site. No longer do you need to slog through the marketplace looking for the newest and hottest Android app to use in your plane or to prepare for your next flight.

The fine folks (ok, me) who brought you PropBlast have launched yet another site. This one, we hope, will not only give you a one stop shop to find reviews and additional information about Android apps of interest to pilots and others who fly but also a place to carry on conversations about these same apps.

The site is loosely based on the popular AviatorApps.com website that specializes in aviation apps for the iPhone platform. Not having found a similar directory for the Android platform (my preferred device) we felt that this will fill a need.

Some of the features you'll find on the site include:

  • Videos of the app in action (when ever possible)
  • image QR Codes you can scan from your phone to quickly find the app in the marketplace
  • Information about the publisher
  • Comments from other aviators
  • Tags, Categories and Search to enable either browsing for or searching for the ideal app
  • A complete roundup with links to all the reviews on a given app

We welcome one and all Avitors using the Android platform to comment on applications that we are reviewing with their thoughts and obvservations.

In the coming weeks we hope to have a comprehensive list up that will be added to as new apps come online and updates to already reviewed apps are made available.

Are you a developer of apps for the Android Platform? Please go to the Android Developers page to learn how to get your applications listed and reviewed in our site at no cost to you. If you are an advertiser who wants to tap into this market, please see our Advertisers page to learn how you can advertise your apps on our site.

Very nice!  I have a feeling your site will be a oft-used resource for pilots with Android phones.  Sometimes I wish I had one, if only so I could get away from AT&T....

Regarding the G3000, I wonder if they've tested to see how the all-digital controls handle a spilled drink, a leaky windshield, or other such conditions.  I could tell you stories of how other Garmin panel mounts respond to those conditions, and it's not pretty. Smile

Re: g3000, let's certainly hope so. I've not seen a mechanical knob go out yet but perhaps they are looking ahead to a day when these boxes have tens of thousands of hours on them.
btw congrats to you and flygirl!

I miss having my iPhone. I loved filing IFR flight plans from my phone. Had to get rid of it though... AT&T service sucks a bag of dicks.

I hope some developers start getting some droid apps out there for aviation! This sight will be used all the damn time!!

Has anyone came up with something like Aero charts for the droid yet?

@Heli_cowboy
Not yet that I can find. Now that ForeFlight has added a weather app (see previous comment), hopefully we'll see them port their Charts app to the Android. Time will tell.

When I emailed Foreflight about what their time frame is for a ForeFlight Mobile 2.4 app this was their response:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glad you enjoyed ForeFlight. Your frustration with AT&T is shared by many.
Our first Android product is actually available in the store today. Search the market for "ForeFlight Weather". The current version provides METAR/TAF/Wind information only. Version 2.0, to be published shortly, includes the QICP animated NEXRAD and satellite. Hopefully that's somewhat of an indication of where we're headed.  However, we don't publish timelines so can't provide any more specifics at this time.
I'm hoping they can get it out soon. Same as ForeFlight File. I loved filing right in the plane with my iphone. Damn you AT&T!!
I can't wait either. One of these days I'll d/l ForeFlight Weather and take it for a spin but File would be even better as I absolutely HATE the way that DUATS behaves in the Android browser.
If you hit the back button after submitting a form ('cause you invariably screwed something up) it takes you back to the login screen and you have to start all the way back at the beginning. Serious pain point.
I think Avilution Quickweather is a great app. Provides quick access to TAFS, METARS, NOTAMS, AIRMETS, Weather, and more fore each of your favorite airports.
I'm getting my FAA briefings and filing via www.dtc.duat.com/mobile . It works great and is no problem on the Moto Droid.
I back that up with ForeFlight WX and several other WX web sites. Hope they get their full app on the Droid soon!
I'm also using the great weight and balance calculator from Appventive (Available in the Droid Market.)
Any other new Droid Aviation Apps out there? When will we see some Aviation apps listed on your Android Aviation Apps web page?
